History Department Defense Guidelines & Outside Reader Approval

Once you have scheduled your defense date with your committee, please let the Graduate Program Administrator (Eileen Bowman, eileen.bowman@nyu.edu) know the date, time, and the names of your committee chair and other committee members. Note that you will need five total committee members (Committee Chair / Dissertation Advisor, 2 other core committee members, and 2 readers.) Please contact Kit as soon as you have your defense scheduled, but no less than two weeks ahead of time, as there is some paperwork that must be prepared for your committee.

The Graduate Assistant (Jessica Corey, jessica.corey@nyu.edu) can help you book a room for your defense and can arrange for a phone unit for you if any of your committee members will not be present at the defense. Again, you will need to contact Jessica at least two weeks ahead of time.

If any of your committee member(s) are not GSAS faculty, you will need to have him/her approved by GSAS to serve on your committee. First, if you have not done so already, you will need to get your committee chair’s approval for this outside reader to serve on your committee. Then, go to the GSAS website at http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.pp.manual and download the “Dissertation Reader Approval Form - outside reader.” Fill it out, attach the CV and anything else the form calls for, and bring the materials in to Eileen Bowman, who will secure departmental approval and then submit the paperwork to GSAS for review. There is no hard deadline for turning in the outside reader paperwork, but perhaps needless to say you should do this as soon as possible in case there are any problems.

Please contact Eileen Bowman if you have any questions. Best wishes as you work toward completion!
