Marilyn Young's Teaching and Research Interests

Research Interests:

My research has been and remains in the area of US-Asian relations. My first book focused on China, more particularly, the late 19th- early 20th century beginnings of US colonial and imperial efforts in Asia. I was interested, as well, in Asian responses to US and more generally Western imperialism and went on to work with a Russian historian on a comparative history of the Russian and Chinese revolutions. In connection with the Chinese revolution, I became interested in the role of women and edited the first anthology of articles on women in China. Although never the center of my research, I maintain an interest in the subject of gender and with two colleagues edited an anthology on women in revolution in Asia and Europe. I have taught courses on the Vietnam war since 1969 and in 1991 published an interpretive narrative of the Vietnam-American war. I am currently engaged in writing a book on the Korean War.

Teaching Interests:

My teaching and research interests are closely tied. Courses include: the Cold War; the Vietnam War; US-East Asian Relations; US Wars in Asia; Women and Social Change; US Foreign Policy, 19th century-present. I have also team-taught courses on world history, Vietnamese history, and the theory and practice of colonialism and imperialism.
