GSAS AwardsApplication Information
For current GSAS History doctoral students
Fall 2008 Competition for Award Year 2009-10
Update: 9.24.08
GSAS announced two corrections to the Fall 2008 Guide concerning the Lane Cooper and Elaine Brody fellowships.
First, the Lane Cooper Fellowship was incorrectly listed as requiring research abroad. There is no requirement for the student to conduct research abroad with this fellowship.
Second, the Elaine Brody Fellowship was incorrectly listed as a dissertation writing fellowship without designation to a discipline area. It is now correctly listed as a dissertation research fellowship for students in the Humanities.
The corrected Guide is now online at http://gsas.nyu.edu/object/grad.acadlife.fall2008awards

Update: 8.20.08
The Graduate School of Arts and Science has not yet announced their deadline for the GSAS Fall Awards, including the Dean’s Dissertation Fellowship, but we wanted to remind you that the date will come up very quickly in the fall semester. Last year, our internal departmental deadline was October 1st and the GSAS deadline was October 12th. It is possible that the dates could be earlier or later this year, and we will send out a follow-up email and post updated information here as soon as GSAS announces this semester’s deadline. In the mean time, now is the time to begin preparing your application, as the deadline will come quickly one way or the other.
The competition is open to graduate students in all departments in the College, including History graduate students. There is a detailed explanation of the awards available last year at the following site:
http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.life.fellowships.html
(Scroll down towards the bottom of the page and click on the link for “GSAS Fall Awards, including Dean's Dissertation Fellowships” to open a PDF document outlining the awards descriptions and application instructions from last year’s awards.)
The GSAS website contains information about last year's awards competition. We urge you to review the information posted there in detail as it is likely to be very similar to the updated information that will later be posted regarding the Fall 2008 Competition for Award Year 2009-2010. Please use last year’s information as a model to begin considering and preparing the following aspects of your application: application cover page, your CV, research/writing proposal, project summary, 3 letters of reference, New York University official transcript, teaching description and summary of teaching experience (Lane Cooper only), Torch summary (Torch only), and Torch National Citizenship Verification (Torch only). Please refer to the guide posted on the GSAS website for which materials are necessary for each award. In order to prepare the strongest applications possible, please discuss your written proposals with your faculty advisors and use the remainder of the summer and early fall to pull together all the relevant information you will need to draft a strong proposal. Information on all the components of the applications is available at the above link.
It is in your best interest to begin working on your applications early. Please refer to the GSAS website (http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.life.fellowships.html) to monitor any updates and announcements from GSAS.
***If you will be applying for any of the GSAS Fall Awards, please notify Jessica Corey (jessica.corey@nyu.edu) to begin a file for your application. Please denote the specific award for which you will be applying.***
Please let Kit Frick (kit.frick@nyu.edu) know if you have any questions.
